The baby Alocasia Polly, also known as the African mask plant, is a Alocasia which is distinguished by its beautiful skeletal white vein patterns on its leaves. While Polly is a hybrid houseplant created relatively recently with mixed origin stories, the genus Alocasia is native to tropical rainforest climates in India, Southeast Asia, Southern China, and the Southern Pacific islands. Alocasias grow giant, umbrella-like leaves which are said to resemble the ear of an elephant. As forest plants they prefer a shady environment, so your little Polly will be thrilled if you can find her a nice spot on a shelf or in a corner where she can comfortably set about the serious business of growing!
The baby Alocasia Polly prefers quite moist soil and is happiest when she gets regular (but small) amounts of water. Beware not to overwater though, as this can cause her roots to rot. Overwatering can also cause the surface of her leaves to ‘sweat’ small droplets of moisture. If you see brown edges beginning to develop on her leaves, this is a signal that she needs to be repotted into a bigger home. Overall, a shady spot and a steady supply of water will keep Polly looking fabulous.
