(Lady's Mantle) Mollis

Lady's mantle makes a low mound of rounded, softly hairy grey green leaves with pleated edges that catch rain and dew in silver beads. Above them, airy sprays of tiny greenish yellow flowers appear from June to August and last for weeks, in the garden and in the vase. It reaches about 40-50 cm in height and 50-60 cm in width, so plant 4-6 per m2 for continuous ground cover. Bees work the small flowers, and the foliage smothers weeds once the clumps knit together. Use it to soften a path edge, to fill the front of a border, or under roses and shrubs in partial shade.

It grows in full sun or partial shade, and in a hot garden a little afternoon shade keeps the leaves fresher. Give it soil that stays slightly moist and improved with compost, though it also copes with clay as long as it does not stand in winter wet. Water in dry spells to stop the leaf edges browning, and remember that plants in pots need checking far more often than those in open ground. Cut the whole plant back to a few centimetres straight after flowering, because fresh leaves appear within weeks and you avoid a carpet of seedlings. It is fully hardy and comes back reliably each spring without protection.
