(Giant Hyssop) Blue Fortune

Agastache 'Blue Fortune' forms upright clumps of aromatic grey-green leaves that smell of aniseed when you brush past them, topped by dense bottlebrush spikes of soft lavender blue. It reaches roughly 80-100 cm tall and 45-60 cm wide, so give it room in the middle or towards the back of a border. Plant 3-4 per square metre for a full, hazy block of colour. The flowers open from July and keep going into September, and few perennials pull in as many bees, bumblebees and butterflies. It suits sunny borders, prairie style planting and gravel gardens, and works in a large container on a terrace as long as it can drain freely.

Give it a spot in full sun, where the stems stay stiff and the scent is strongest. Any reasonably fertile garden soil works, but it must drain well, since wet feet in winter do more damage than cold. Water in the first season while it settles in and during long dry spells; plants in a pot dry out far faster and need checking every few days in summer. Leave the seed heads standing over winter and cut the whole plant back to about 10 cm in early spring, just as new shoots appear at the base. It is fully hardy in the open ground and comes back reliably each year.
