(Japanese Maple) Palmatum Shaina

The Acer Palmatum Shaina is a compact Japanese maple with finely cut foliage that opens bright red in spring and deepens to darker red and bronze tones later in the season. In autumn the leaves put on one more show of rich colour. It reaches about 150 cm in height and 100-120 cm in width at maturity. Plant 1 per square meter as a solitary feature in a border or in a large pot. It is perfect for patios, front gardens and Japanese-inspired corners.

Plant the Acer Palmatum Shaina in a sheltered spot in partial shade, as strong midday sun and harsh wind can scorch the leaves. It prefers humus-rich, slightly acidic and well-draining soil that never stays waterlogged. Water regularly during dry spells, especially in a pot, because container soil dries out much faster. Prune sparingly in late summer or early autumn and only remove dead or crossing branches. This maple is hardy, but in a pot you should protect the roots with fleece or hessian during severe frost.
