(Japanese Maple) Moonrise

The Acer Moonrise is an elegant Japanese maple with large, softly lobed leaves that open fresh green and turn glowing orange and red in autumn. It reaches about 300 cm in height and 200-250 cm in width at maturity, growing slowly into a graceful, rounded small tree. Plant one per 4 square meters, as a solitary feature in a border, a gravel garden or a large container. The small spring flowers are modest, but the changing foliage colour carries the plant through the seasons. It is fully hardy, so it stays outside all year round.

Plant the Acer Moonrise in a semi-shaded, sheltered position, as strong midday sun and wind can scorch the leaves. It prefers humus-rich, slightly acidic soil that drains well and never stays waterlogged. Water regularly during dry spells, especially in the first years and when grown in pots, as container plants dry out much faster. Pruning is rarely needed, so only remove dead or crossing branches in late summer or early autumn, never in spring when the sap is rising. The plant is hardy, but in a pot the roots appreciate some winter protection in severe frost.
