(Japanese Maple) Dissectum

The Acer Dissectum is a Japanese maple with finely cut, feathery leaves on an elegant, gracefully arching habit. The foliage unfolds fresh in spring and turns a warm glowing colour in autumn. It reaches about 200 cm in height and 200-250 cm in width at maturity. Give each plant at least 2 square meters in a border, or grow it as a solitary specimen in a large pot. It is a striking focal point for patios, courtyards and Japanese-style or small gardens.

Plant the Acer Dissectum in sun to partial shade, ideally sheltered from strong wind and hot afternoon sun, which can scorch the delicate leaves. It prefers humus-rich, well-draining soil that stays lightly moist but never waterlogged. Water regularly during dry spells, and more often when grown in a pot, as container plants dry out much faster. Prune only lightly in late autumn or winter, removing dead or crossing branches to keep the open shape. It is hardy, but in a pot the roots need protection from hard frost, so wrap the pot or move it to a sheltered spot in winter.
