Best time to repot your little baby plants

It may sound a little simple, repotting your baby plants, but this is also a very important step for your green friends! After proper care and love, baby plants also benefit from being repotted from time to time.

Plants can generally be divided into three groups; slow growers, medium growers and fast growers. For the slow and medium growers, it is not at all bad if you skip repotting. Repotting too soon can have a bad influence on the plant and its roots and you would rather avoid this! But when is the best time and what should you pay attention to?

Spring fever

Spring is also the best time to repot baby plants. Spring is when the growing season begins. This is a period that lasts from March to June. The days get lighter, there is more sunshine and the temperatures slowly get warmer. The ideal conditions for repotting plants. Plants like to be repotted during this period because, like me, they get more energy from more daylight and warmer temperatures. Repotting can be a big risk for a plant because the roots can usually be damaged. During the growing period, your plant has much more energy to quickly recover from this damage. Therefore, spring is the season of choice for repotting and winter absolutely not. If they are really ready for it of course and have grown sufficiently!

Advantages of repotting plants

The most important benefit; it stimulates the growth of your plant! For your plant to grow well, it is especially important that the roots can grow. Roots can only grow if they have enough space. By repotting your plant into a larger pot, you ensure that the roots have more room to grow. Once they have more space you will see that your baby plant will grow more and more into a mature plant and be happy in a larger pot.

How do you know when your BabyPLNTS are ready to be repotted?

There are several signs you can tell if your baby plants are ready to be repotted. As a PLNTSparent, you want nothing more than for your plants to grow well and be happy. Below are seven points on how you can tell that your baby is actually not a baby anymore!

  • The most simple one is actually that the ratio of the little plant to the pot size is no longer right, the plant falls over easily and you see
  • The roots are peeping out of the ground
  • The plant has stopped growing and the leaves are starting to get a bit of color
  • Young root tips sticking out of the edge of the pot
  • The soil is drying out faster
  • If you carefully remove the plant from the pot, you will see an accumulation of roots at the bottom
  • If you have a small growing pot around your baby plant, when the roots push through the holes in the bottom you know more space is needed!

Do you recognize one or more of the above signs? Then it's a top idea to start repotting your little friend(s)! The supplies are very simple which you can of course find in our store. For repotting plants you don't need much at all. All you need is a nice new pot, some extra fresh potting soil and a watering can for a nice splash of water after repotting!

All in all, it is super important to repot your baby plants every now and then for proper growth. A happy plant is a happy PLNTSparent.
