Originally from the lush rainforests of Central and South America, she prefers to stay out of direct sunlight. Instead, she thrives in soft, filtered light beneath the treetops. Unlike many climbers, she doesn’t grow straight up but gracefully trails along the forest floor. She will turn your space into a tropical paradise with a touch of luxury that you will enjoy every day. With the right care and a little love, this plant truly sparkles.

Fun fact! Did you know her soft, fuzzy stems aren’t just for show? In the wild, they help her retain moisture and cling to her surroundings. Smart and stunning, she is the full package.

Care guide

Want your Philodendron Verrucosum to really shine? The right care makes all the difference. She may be a bit picky, but once you get to know her, she will become one of the most breathtaking plants in your collection. From light and watering to soil and humidity, here is how to keep her happy!

Light

The Verrucosum is a true shade princess. She thrives in low to medium light and really doesn’t like direct sunlight. Too much sun can fade or even burn her beautiful velvet leaves.

She prefers gentle, indirect light. Think of a spot near a north- or east-facing window where light softly filters through. There, she will grow peacefully and look her best.

Tip: If you only have south-facing windows, no problem! Just place her a little further from the window or use a sheer curtain to soften the light. It will give her the jungle vibes she loves, just like in the wild.

Watering

The Verrucosum loves a bit of routine. During summer she prefers regular small drinks to keep her soil lightly moist. Just make sure the soil doesn’t stay too wet, as her roots really don’t like sitting in water. In winter, she takes it slow, so it is totally fine to let the top layer dry out before watering again. As for misting, better skip it. Her velvety leaves may look like they are begging for a little mist, but they actually hold onto moisture really well. That can lead to mould, which is definitely not part of the glow-up plan!

Soil

She is all about airflow. A light, well-draining potting mix keeps her roots happy and breathing. Try mixing in some perlite, coco coir, or a bit of vermiculite to keep it fluffy. Her roots will grow strong, and she will thrive from the ground up. Tip: Want to give her an upgrade? Add a moss pole when she starts climbing. She will reward you with even bigger, more dramatic leaves! Total show-off, in the best way.

Temperature & humidity

Warm and humid is her happy place. Keep her between 20 and 26 °C and make sure the humidity stays above 50%. Is your home not quite a rainforest? No problem. A humidifier or a little dish of water with clay pebbles nearby can do the trick.

Tip: She will also love a spa moment in the bathroom. After a hot shower, place her on the counter or somewhere steamy (but not soaking), and she will feel right at home.

Propagation

Want to grow more of your Verrucosum? Great idea. She is surprisingly easy to propagate, especially if you give her a little extra love along the way. Before you know it, you will have a mini version of your leafy beauty. With just a few simple steps, you can easily create new cuttings from your existing plant. It’s a lovely way to see your Verrucosum thrive while enjoying the process of growing more green friends, whether for yourself or as a gift for fellow plant lovers.

Step 1:

Start by grabbing a clean, sharp pair of scissors and snipping a healthy stem about 15 cm long. Make sure it has at least one node (that little bump where roots grow) and one or two leaves. Cut just below the node, since that is where the new roots will sprout.

Step 2:

Now you have got two options: water or soil.

Water is super simple! Pop the cutting in a glass, keeping only the node under water and the leaves above. Place it in a bright spot and refresh the water once a week.

If soil is more your thing, that is totally fine. Pick a loose, well-draining mix, nestle the node in gently, and keep the soil slightly damp. She will settle in nicely and start building those roots at her own pace.

Step 3:

Place the cutting somewhere with bright, indirect light and keep the humidity nice and cosy. A plastic bag or mini greenhouse can help; just remember to open it daily to let in some fresh air.

Step 4:

After a few weeks, you will start seeing those little roots show up. That is your sign she is ready to move into her own pot with some fluffy, well-draining soil. You have done it. You have grown a brand new plant baby, and she is going to look amazing!

Tip: She feels right at home in a mix of coco coir, perlite and a touch of vermiculite. Light, airy and super comfy, just the way her roots like it.

Is the Philodendron Verrucosum toxic?

A little bit, yes. She might look soft and harmless, but it is best to keep her out of reach of pets and little ones, just to be safe. Her beauty is for admiring, not nibbling.

How fast does the Philodendron Verrucosum grow?

With the right mix of light, humidity and care, she will grow happily and steadily. Give her a moss pole, and she will reward you with even bigger, more impressive leaves that make her stand out even more.

Why is my Philodendron Verrucosum getting yellow leaves?

Yellow leaves usually mean she is either getting too much water or too much direct sunlight. Gently check the soil; if it is still quite damp, let it dry out a little before watering again. And have a look at her spot in the house. If she is catching harsh sunlight, try moving her somewhere with softer, indirect light. She will thank you for it.

What pests are common for the Philodendron Verrucosum?

Even though she is pretty tough, unwanted guests can still sneak in. Keep an eye out for spider mites, mealybugs, aphids and scale insects. These pests often hide under the leaves or along the stems, so it is worth giving her a regular check-up. If you do spot something, neem oil is a gentle, natural way to help her stay healthy and pest-free.

Is the Philodendron Verrucosum easy to care for?

She can be a little sensitive, but she is not hard to please. As long as she gets enough light, warmth and humidity, she will thrive beautifully. Even if your home isn’t exactly a tropical jungle, a little extra care goes a long way in keeping her happy.
