Hi PLNTS community. Let me introduce myself. My name is Bernd, I am born and raised in a small city near Munich (Germany), I am 33 years old and I work full-time (from home) as a product manager for a German cosmetic brand. I live together with my 11 year old French bulldog Emma and all my green friends in our 60 square meter apartment. Cosy, hippie-style and green.

When did you start having and taking care of PLNTS, and why?
I have always been a plant lover, I already had plants in my room when I was just a little kid. My parents rented a huge garden with all different kinds of outdoor plants when I grew up. So I think that that is where my love for plants started.
I started to collect plants myself when I moved into my very own apartment in July 2015. It is actually still the same apartment and it grew into the jungle it is now. I started to get more interest in plants, so of course I started looking for inspiration on Instagram and this how I found out about all the beautiful indoor plants. That is when I started to collect them. It is such a satisfying hobby, to see them all grow.. I like to work with my hands and to see results, it´s calming and good for my spirit and soul.
The first plant that I adopted was a Monstera Deliciosa which I totally overwatered, in the end it died.. But I got better as I got more plants to take care of! So that is also something I really learned and what is a great tip for every plant lover: less water is always better! Stick your finger into the soil and feel how moist it is, that’ll help a you lot. You can always add more water, but you can’t remove it once it is in!

I found that in those strange times online plant shopping got way more fun than it was before Covid-19. Plant swapping got even more popular during the last few months. I love the idea of propagating plants for friends, and that is also what I like to do lately. My friends all enjoy it so far! The global plant community is insane at the moment! But when it comes to plants and interior I recommend Sarah @plantsiren from California, Janine @j9s_jungle from Berlin or Naile & Ada @lepetitjungle from Turkey!
Do you name any of your PLNTS?
Oh no! At the moment I got 283 green friends, I love them but naming them would be too much! I do know all their scientific names of course. The Philodendron is actually my favorite variety at the moment. I love their individuality and how their leaves always reach for the sun. There are so many different shapes and colors as well, I just love it! Now on top of my wish list is a Monstera Thai Constellation actually! So any offers are highly appreciated :)))

For all the new or expecting plants parents: your knowledge will all come with experience. Read a lot about the plants you want to get. I personally started with easy care plants such as Spider plant, Snake plant, Peace lily and Zamioculcas. If you already got some experience you should definitely go with some Philodendrons, Palms and Monstera’s to get the jungle feeling! Last but not least I want to give you all a good summer heat tip. I check my plants soil with my finger every two days, so that I know for sure when they are in need of water. Balcony plants need to be watered every day. I also mist spray a lot and I use a humidifier during the warm season. I hope this helps you all and enjoy the summer PLNTS community!
