Succulent - Care tips

Succulent
Succulents are the ideal indoor plants. These plants store water in their thick leaves, so you don't need to water succulents much. The succulent is not only a plant that is easy to look after, but also one that creates a special atmosphere in the house.
Information about succulents
Succulents are quite popular. This is not surprising, because these plants have many benefits. For example, succulents have their own water reservoir, they don't mind being forgotten and there are so many different species that there will always be one that you like. The origin of many succulents is the Amazon. There are many different varieties for each species. There are, for example, almost 1700 varieties of the Peperomia. Succulents mainly grow in warm, shady places. They are used to having a lot of water sometimes and a drier period at other times. A little neglect is therefore not a problem for this plant. So we can say that succulents are ideal if you don't have green thumbs. In South America, succulents are also seen as lucky charms, especially the Peperomia. We completely understand that! That’s also the perfect reason to give succulents as a gift more often ;-)
Varieties of succulents
There are many different species of succulents that originate from all over the world. All succulents can be divided into their own species or family. Well known succulent families are the Cactus and the Aloë Vera. We would like to introducea few more large and beautiful families to you.
The first one we would like to mention is the Peperomia family. Peperomias are popular houseplants, also because there are hundreds of different species with different appearances. The Peperomia Hope and the Peperomia Pepperspot are probably the best known and very beautiful!
The other well-known species we do not want to keep from you is the Sansevieria. This family filters toxics from the air and needs little care. Great, isn't it? Are you enthusiastic yet? Then take a look at the Sansevieria Futura Superba or the Sansevieria Fernwood Mikado.
In addition, the Euphorbia, the Crassula, the Echeveria, the Wall Pepper and the Bromelia are also beautiful succulents.
Care tips for succulents
Caring for succulents is easy if you know exactly what to do. With the right information about growth requirements, we help you keep your succulents alive and beautiful.
Light and location for succulents
In the dry and warm regions of the world, succulents sometimes lack water, but there is certainly no shortage of sunlight. Most species therefore prefer a warm spot with sunlight in your home. In summer, all succulents enjoy a bit of fresh air on the balcony or terrace. Especially with flowering succulents, the temperature reduction at night has a stimulating effect on the flowers. There are also limits to this: If the temperature drops below 15°C during the day or if there is a lot of rain, it is a good idea to move the plant back inside.
Succulents can be put in normal potting soil, but a targeted mix, such as our succulent potting mix, is even better. This gives the succulent a longer period of moisture.
Water
A succulent is a plant that is common in tropical regions. The plant is therefore used to a lot of drought and little water. To get the most out of your succulent it is important not to water it so often. You should consider watering it once a month. Only water your plant when the soil is completely dry, so always check this carefully. Succulents need more water in the summer than in the winter. So always take a good look at the soil of the plant and determine whether you need to give it extra water.
Nutrition
There is a special succulent nutrition for succulents. When watering a succulent, give it this 100% organic plant food. This way the plant stays strong and healthy and you will enjoy your succulent even longer. Do this, however, only in the warmer months. A succulent does not need this in the winter.
Propagation of succulents
Propagating a succulent can be done in two ways. Does a succulent have leaves? Then you can multiply a succulent with loose leaves. Cut the leaves from the outside of the plant and take a small piece of the stem with it. New roots grow faster from the stem. Then you put the leaf on the soil. Use cutting soil or normal potting soil.
It is also possible to take cuttings from a succulent with a stem. Cut the stem, remove the bottom leaves of the stem and let the stem dry. When this is done, we advise you to carefully put the stem back into cutting soil or water. Then it is fingers crossed for roots to develop and a plant that will grow.
Most common pest on succulents
A succulent is a strong plant. In general, the plant is not really susceptible to diseases and pests. However, succulents can suffer from diseases. When the leaves of a succulent change colour it often indicates that the wrong potting soil has been used or that there has been too much fertilisation. If a succulent is exposed to too much draught, it can suffer from aphids. Do you suspect that your succulent is suffering from something? Visit our PLNTSdoctor page.
Are succulents poisonous for pets or children?
A succulent can be poisonous. Note that this differs per species. Do you want to know if the succulent you have is poisonous? Then we recommend you to type the name in Google. Online you will find many articles that will make you a lot wiser. Just make sure that children and pets stay away from plants. If you see that a bite has been taken from the plant, pay attention to whether complaints arise. If this is the case, contact a doctor as soon as possible.
