When Isil moved to Amsterdam in 2017, she suddenly came up with the idea of making her own candles. It was not a long-planned project, but because she could not find sustainable candles with natural scents in other shops herself. Smell is the most important sense that affects our emotions and mood. A scent can bring you back to a memory, make you happy or move you. You tell a story with it. She wanted to share this with others and so began the adventure of making scented candles.

Sustainability plays an important role in Isil's life, she adapts more and more. About 10 years ago, she found out that burning ordinary candles (paraffin) is toxic (Want to know more about why paraffin is harmful? Read it in our blog here). It is very important to find out exactly what is in a candle. Plant-based candles also burn two to three times longer than paraffin candles. All the more reason to make her candles as plant-based as possible! Candles from the very good candle co. are made from 100% rapeseed wax mixed with a scented oil blend. Rapeseed is a flower that grows in Europe and It’s natural, non-toxic, renewable and biodegradable. Making candles sounds easier than it is, it's all about proper preparation! The wax needs to be heated at the right temperature, fragrances must be properly made and mixed, you need to have enough labels, so there is a lot involved before the real candle-making can begin. Everything is made in her studio, from A to Z, a truly unique handmade candle!

Isil gets her inspiration for the scents from different places around the world. She makes sure she mixes it in such a way that it immediately brings her back to that place. Her two absolute favourite scents are Indio and Asagiri. These two scents are inspired by music festivals. The scent Indio is inspired by the Coachella festival in Indio, it reminds her of a hot desert day and it makes her happy. Asagiri has earthy undertones and is a very fresh fragrance inspired by the Asagiri Jam Festival, held on the foothills of Mount Fuji in Japan. Every time she lights those candles, she goes back to that happy memory. With her candles and story, she hopes that more and more people will switch their paraffin candles for plant-based candles.

Isil's dream for the future is a very large farm where she can grow everything herself, from herbs to flowers and recycle as many things as possible. A wonderful dream right?
