Colocasia

The Colocasia is part of the Arums (Araceae), which is a massive plant family with over 4 thousand species. The Colocasia is also called ‘Taro’, since the root is a vegetable eaten by Hawaiien people. But we do not recommend digesting the Taro, since she can cause lots of negative symptoms when consumed raw. If you would ever like to know what Taro tastes like, you can get bubble tea with Taro flavor. :)

Colocasia Plant Care Tips

The Colocasia can grow very big, glossy, green leaves. This plant can become pretty big and as the plant grows her pot should too. Keep an eye on that she is not becoming root bound, if this is not happening she needs maintenance repotting every 2-3 years.

Light and placement for Colocasia

The Colocasia thrives in indirect bright light and she can tolerate about 2 hours of morning sunlight. Near an East, North or South facing window will do the trick. She can tolerate quite a few temperatures, making sure it stays between 13 and 29 degrees. She will grow best inside a soil mix of soil, peat moss and perlite. These substrates have all the qualities that the Colocasia likes.

Water

The Colocasia is a very thirsty plant and loves to have moist soil at all times. This will result in your Colocasia needing water 1-2 times a week. Always check the soil moistness before watering and let excess water drain out. A puddle accumulating on the bottom of the pot will result in root rot, so keep an eye on this. This is why a nursery pot with an outer pot, or terracotta pot works best for the Taro. The Colocasia also loves some humidity. Keep this above 60% or give her a humidifier that keeps her cozy.

Nutrition

You can provide your Colocasia with a portion of PLNTS nutrition every 2 weeks during the growing season. Add this liquid nutrition to your water and water your Colocasia as you would normally do.

Propagating Colocasia

You propagate your Taro by looking inside the soil of your Colocasia and see if she produced any extra tubers. If so, you can plant these and care for them. You will have a new Colocasia plant in no time.

Most common pests on Colocasia

You should keep an eye on Mealybugs and Spider Mites. Nevertheless, if your urban jungle is infected with Thrips or Scale, your Colocasia will be in danger too.

Are Colocasia poisonous for your pets or children?

As mentioned, Colocasia are not safe to ingest raw. That is why they are not safe to have around children or beloved pets that might want to take a secret nibble.
